On the onset of the release of his directorial debut, Shekhar Suman synergizes with Fortis Hospital holding a panel discussion talking about Anesthesia Awareness and role of safe surgery outcome post anesthesia.
Popular actor & host Shekhar Suman in his very first directorial venture ‘Heartless’ brings to light a rare medical phenomenon of Anesthesia Awareness which is an integral part of the romantic medical thriller starring Adhyayan Suman, Ariana Ayam, Om Puri, Deepti Naval & Madan Jain.
After the promo of the movie doing the rounds, Fortis; a leading, integrated healthcare delivery provider in Asia came forward to be associated with the movie & spread awareness among the masses regarding the unusual medical phenomenon & hence held a panel discussion talking about the rare medical condition.
Shekhar Suman, having chosen a very sensitive medical condition as a subject for his maiden directorial confesses to having done enough research to understand the intricacies & being able to show it correctly in his movie, “Imagine going through a surgery wide awake but unable to tell anyone that the scalpel just cutting through your skin HURTS because you’re supposed to be unconscious but you are actually just bodily paralyzed from outside and conscious from within. Heartless, the movie is based on the never seen in films before phenomenon of anesthesia awareness. While the film is fiction the phenomenon unbelievable as it sounds, is absolutely real.”
Adhyayan Suman who apparently has lied down on the stretcher for 18 hours at a stretch remembers freaking out while shooting, “I absolutely don’t understand how these doctors cut open one’s body & are absolutely cool about it. I know it is their job & these guys are pretty brave but it freaked me out, lying down on an actual stretcher where thousands of patients have been operated, shooting in an operation theatre of an actual hospital made me crazy. My character suffers from Anesthesia Awareness, he is absolutely helpless, miserable & agonized, God forbid but no human should have to pass through this.”
Said Dr. Vijay Shetty, Senior Cardiac Anaesthetist and Head of Department of Anaesthesia, ” When one is supposed to be unconscious because of the anaesthesia but is actually just bodily paralysed from outside and conscious from within, that is anaesthesia awareness, a frightening condition that may occur in one in thousands of patients.”
“Fortunately, there is technology available to monitor brain activity that can indicate if the patient is undergoing awareness during surgery. It has been proven in multiple scientific clinical studies to reduce the current incidence of anaesthesia awareness,” adds Dr. Rahul Pandit, Head Intensivist of Fortis Hospital
Dr Vijay Shetty, however also cautions “The evolution of the Brain Activity monitors is still ongoing and there are sporadic reports about incidence of awareness in spite of using these monitors. As Anaesthetists working at Fortis Hospital, we are focussed on detailed planning of anaesthesia as well as conduct of anaesthesia with proper protocols and monitors including Brain Activity monitors and Agent monitors along with a dependable plan for pain control. A disciplined approach goes a long way in reducing the incidence of awareness under Anaesthesia.”
Kudos to Shekhar Suman for attempting something like this! Heartless releases on 7th February!
