Noted film director Mira Nair has turned down an invite to attend the Haifa International Film festival in Israel. On her twitter page, she posted that she won’t be going to Israel at this time and will go only when the walls come down and the occupation is gone. She said that she will go to Israel when its stops giving privilege to one religion over the another. Mira Nair was invited to attend the Haifa International Film Festival as a guest of honor for her 2012 film “The Reluctant Fundamentalist.” The film tells the story of a young Pakistani man chasing corporate success on Wall Street who finds himself embroiled in a conflict with his American dream, a hostage crisis and the call of his family’s homeland. It is not clear now whether the film would still be screened at the Haifa film festival. The Artistic director of the Haifa Film Festival, Pnina Blair, said that she opposed cultural boycotts of any kind and the festival is an example of pluralism and coexistence, and the program reflects this approach.
