Rarely do you see one filmmaker owing his journey to another. But producer-director Raju Mavani owes his acting career to filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. “Although I started my journey in the film industry as a director and producer people know me as an actor and it’s all thanks to Ramu. I wasn’t inclined towards facing the camera but he urged that I take to acting and soon Satya happened,” says Mavani who’s directed movies like Iski Topi Uske Sar and Saif Ali Khan starrer Suraksha back in the ‘90s.
The filmmaker turned actor went onto working in as many as seven movies of RGV including the likes of Mast, Sarkar, Darwaza Bandh Rakho among others. And now with more than 15 films to his credit the actor will next be seen in Salman Khan’s Jai Ho. Little do many know that his association with Salman Khan goes back a long way.
“After Maine Pyaar Kiya, I was to sign Salman in Baaghi which I was producing initially. But things didn’t workout and I had a fall out with the writers due to some creative difference and the movie later went on to Nitin Manmohan,” recalls Mavani who has also starred in Salman’s Wanted. One can only wait to see the actor share screen space with Salman once again in Jai Ho.
