The proceeds from views of the video will support Save the Children’s ongoing relief operationsacross four districts of Uttarakhand (India), which is focussed on children who are always the ones who need the maximum assistance during such emergencies.
Prozpekt, who is known for his socio-political style of rap says, “Vijay is a track that talks about a disturbingly large percentage of children in India who are denied basic education and forced into labour at a very young age — due to a combination of social and economic factors which are rooted in poor policies and mostly apathetic politics.”
With the launch of ‘Vijay’ , it hopes to create awareness about child labour in India and the lack of education at the grass-root levels. The song follows a style of story-telling uncommon in rap music in India, taking the listener through the struggle of a boy named ‘Vijay’ who represents lakhs of children in India living in poverty.
Latha Caleb, Programme Director, Save the Children welcomed the initiative and said that “innovative methods are needed to capture the attention of people to change mindsets and Vijay is a bold step in that direction.” She felt that social messages about disadvantaged children would help other children understand these children better, apart from also informing the grown-ups– who are the ones who promote child labour.
The census of 2001 had revealed that 12.6 million children under the age of 14 were engaged in child labour in India. This number was known to be a conservative estimate.
Prozpekt has pledged to donate all the revenue that will be earned from the video on YouTube to Save the Children’s relief operations in flood hit Uttarakhand.
