Bengaluru: Come May 27th, Bangalore will see what is slated as the last performance of the much acclaimed theatre artist Master Hirannaiah as he presents the latest version of his much popular plays “Lanchavathara” and “Makmal Topi” in support of Mahila Dakshata Samiti, a non-governmental organisation committed to the upliftment of women and children. Mastrayana-an artistic fusion from Natarathnakara Master Hirannaiah is a unique theatre experiment presented by Mahila Dakshata Samiti in association with K Hirannaiah Mitra Mandali. Scheduled to be held at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall on May 27, 2015 from 7 pm to 9.30 pm, the evening will also feature a shadow play and a ventriloquism act by the internationally acclaimed artist Sri. Prahalad.
The proceeds from the play will fund the various ambitious projects taken up by the Mahila Dakshata Samiti focused on the upliftment of women and children in distress, supporting in raising their self-esteem and helping them lead a life of respect and dignity. The Samiti perceives that its latest artistic venture would be a fitting vehicle to carry forward its endeavours in the field of social service.
While Lanchavathara offers a scathing political satire on the current political situation and its destructive effects, Makmal Topi mirrors the prevailing social problems in the society and its comments on politics along with humour to regale the crowd. Master Hirannaiah has been staging these plays all over the state and outside for the past almost 50 years.
‘Lanchavathara’, famous for its satirical look at the hypocrisy and corruption in the political arena is dynamic in that, its depicted differently at each show as Master Hirannaiah updates it to mirror the times. A bit of updating with party symbols and personalities is all that it takes for the play to carry forward its fight against corruption and apathy. However, the fun it evokes is good-natured in spirit, which explains its standing and immense popularity in the cultural arena. Lanchavathara has been staged over 11,000 times creating a world record, renewing its message, each time on stage.
Dr Master Hirannaiah, Producer, Director, Actor and also the protagonist of the play says, “so long as there’s corruption, Lanchavathara will be relevant. This version of Lanchavathara will be staged only once in Bangalore as we are doing this to raise funds for a charitable cause.”
